Redwood Shores, CA—After a long day of racing, No. 3t California and No. 3t Princeton men’s varsity eights along with No. 11 California and No. 7 Virginia open varsity and defending national champion Princeton lightweight women’s varsity eights advanced undefeated to day two of the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic on the Redwood Shores Lagoon, March 28.
The No. 16 Stanford men’s varsity crew edged No. 18 Pennsylvania in the morning session by 0.5 seconds, however they came up short against No. 7 Navy in the afternoon session. The No. 6 Cardinal women’s varsity ran into No. 7 Virginia and No. 8 Michigan State and were unable to notch a win in Saturday racing. Stanford’s lightweight eight fared no better suffering losses to Harvard and Georgetown.
“There were some fantastic races today and it goes without saying that this event wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of Windermere Real Estate,” said Craig Amerkhanian, Stanford’s Director of Rowing and Men’s Head Coach. “Despite our setback this afternoon to Navy, I was encouraged with our come-from-behind win over Penn. I’m confident that the varsity will be ready for Yale in the morning.”
In addition to the collegiate competition, the regatta also includes racing at the juniors level. Local teams from Los Gatos RC, Pacific RC, Stanford RC, Peninsula AC, St. Ignatius HS, Berkeley HS as well as a visiting crew from Osnabruck, GER also competed.
“Today’s match-ups have provided an exciting first day of the second annual Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic and the unique line-up of teams have drawn thousands of fans to view the races from the surrounding shores,” said Mark Ewing, President of Windermere Real Estate in Northern California. “It’s an honor to witness the competition and camaraderie of these dedicated athletes and Windermere is proud to support such an inspirational sport.”
The stage is set for Sunday with the regatta championship on the line. Coincidentally, in the men’s and women’s open division, each event will be decided in dual race match-ups that will decide the regatta’s overall winner in each division. Meanwhile, the Princeton lightweight seem to be in the driver’s seat for the regatta crown on Sunday.
